Thurrock 1-0 Cheshunt
From Ship Lane
Ryman One North
THURROCK edged out play-off rivals Cheshunt to keep the pressure on table-toppers AFC Sudbury.
Fleet’s David Cowley scored the only goal of the game to move Thurrock 11 points clear of Cheshunt, who are just one position outside of the play-off places.
Thurrock started the brighter of the two teams, with James Goode bringing a flying save out of Cheshunt goalkeeper James May, with the keeper back on his fit to tip over Cowley’s follow-up.
However, the away side ended the half strongly and were the width of the post away from opening the scoring.
But Cowley made sure Fleet got their noses in front a minute before half-time. Ross Wall chased a lost cause and, after the Cheshunt full-back had forced May into a rushed clearance Cowley was on hand to fire home from 25 yards.
Into the second-half, Ronnie Winn missed a golden chance when his header somehow sailed over the bar when he was well-placed.
Cheshunt rarely looked like getting back into the match, although Rhys Madden did have to save a late snapshot from the visitors.
The result leaves Thurrock second, 10 points off AFC Sudbury.
Thurrock: Madden, Morgan, Clark, Baker, Sutton, Goode, Agombar, Toner, Wall, Winn (Gleed), Cowley
