RYMAN League Division One North club Tilbury are looking for a new manager following the departure of Tony Cross.

Club secretary Mark Southgate announced that Cross and the club have parted company by mutual agreement after a meeting last night (Monday).

However, he added that Cross left with the club's best wishes and thanks.

He took over for his second spell in charge of the club in the close season two years ago after the club had been relegated to the Essex Senior League.

"Tony's first job was to get us back up the non-league ladder which he did at the first attempt. His next job was to keep us there and he did that this season," said Southgate.

"However, the club needs to look forward. We have ambitions and it was felt that the time is right for a change as some new faces could give fresh impetus to the challenges that Tilbury face.

"Tony has some great qualities and his passion and enthusiasm for the game is second to none but at this moment the club needs a change of direction.

"I am sure everyone at Tilbury wishes Tony well and he leaves with our gratitude."

The club say they have already had expressions of interest in the position of manager but they plan to wait a while before making an appointment.

"The non-league grapevine must work very quickly because I have already received a call from a very well qualified and experienced manager and I am sure there will be others out there who would like to be considered for the position.

"Our chairman, Robbie Nash, knows there is no need for a rushed appointment at this time and he and the club's committee will take time to evaluate all applications.

"Anyone who would like to be considered should contact me in the first instance," said Southgate, whose telephone number is 07979525117.

Cross was philosophical about the decision saying: "In the two years that I was there I did what was asked of me so I'm disappointed with what has happened. People in football will understand how I feel about leaving and the club's decision but that's what happens in the game.

"I've been at Tilbury as a player and a manager and I will always have an affection for the club and the place and I wish the club well.

"I will be looking to carry on in football and I am confident I can do a good job so we will have to see what the summer brings."

Tilbury have also announced that they will be disbanding their reserve season next season, after two years in the Kent League.
