Grays Athletic 1-1 VCD Athletic

From Mill Field

Ryman Premier League

GRAYS Athletic could only draw with struggling VCD Athletic, although did stretch their unbeaten run to six games in the process.

Blues won at VCD only four days previously in north Kent, but Mark Bentley’s side were unable to repeat the feat, despite taking the lead through Correy Davidson.

Grays started the brighter and Dumebi Dumaka headed over the crossbar in the early exchanges, with Joao Carlos coming close soon after.

But VCD grew into the game and starting moving the ball well, with Leigh Bremner causing the Grays backline problems.

Harry Agonbar, back on loan from Swindon Town, almost got on the end of a Dumaka shot, with Nick Blue keeping out Kenny Beaney, the man who got the late winner the previous week.

Carlos curled an effort wide but it should have been VCD that took a half-time lead.

Beaney gave the ball away and James Duckworth broke through only to be denied by Lamar Johnson, in for the suspended Conor Gough.

Grays made the breakthrough five minutes after the break, after Dumaka won the ball on the halfway line and played in the speedy Davidson who slotted the ball past Blue.

Johnson was having a fine game and kept out Bremner once again, although Grays could have extended their advantage.

Davidson fired wide, while a Jey Siva free kick fell to Jay Leader but his volley was saved well by Blue with his legs.

And they were made to rue the miss, as VCD went up the other end and equalised.

Duckworth sent in a corner and whipped in a vicious ball and Bremner nipped in and glanced the ball past Johnson to bring the scores level.

Grays struggled to make an impact after that, with Leader’s heading sailing over and that was how it stayed.

The result leaves 13th placed Grays six points off the final play-off place, with a game in hand on many of the sides above them.
