EAST Thurrock United continued their excellent start to the National League South season with a 2-0 victory over Bognor Regis Town.

Goals from Montel Agyemang and Sam Higgins in either half ensured John Coventry’s team remain in third place in the standings.

The home team took a 12th minute lead through Agyemang.

The former Maldon & Tiptree winger scored his fifth goal of the season to surpass his total for last term in double-quick time.

George Allen had fed the ball into Higgins, who controlled excellently and sent a cross to the far post which Agyemang tapped into the net.

East Thurrock were well on top - Lewis Smith halted by Dan Lincoln in the away goal, although his strike had seen the sting taken out of it following a deflection.

The hosts came closer to doubling their lead inside 25 minutes, only for the crossbar to deny Max Cornhill and keep it at one, with Lincoln beaten.

Further golden chances came and went for the home team - Femi Akinwande sending a volley flying over the bar from close range.

Higgins saw an effort pushed past the post by Lincoln, with an effort ruled out for a foul shortly afterwards but the striker wasn’t to be denied.

It took the hosts just 60 seconds to double their advantage in the second half.

A free-kick was sent in by Reece Harris and Higgins stooped to net.

Akinwande had the ball in the net on 70 minutes, but the hosts were again penalised for a foul in the build-up.

James Crane and James Wild had half chances to bring Bognor Regis back into the match.

But it wasn’t to be, as East Thurrock look ahead to a trip to Dartford on Monday.
