East Thurrock United 0-0 Bognor Regis Town

From Rookery Hill

Ryman Premier League

EAST Thurrock United and B ognor Regis Town could not be separated in this top-of-the-table clash of few chances.

Rocks, who share the same nickname as Bognor, came into the match as the team to catch, sitting pretty at the top of the Ryman Premier League, but they couldn’t break down their Kent opponents.

The division’s top scorers, Sam Higgins and Jason Prior, were on show although defender s came out on top in difficult conditions.

The best chance of the first half went the way of the visitors but they failed to make the most of it.

Alfie Rutherford unleashed a strike from inside the area in the opening exchanges, but he was unable to connect properly and the ball was deflected into the arms of home goalkeeper Lucas Lidakevicius.

Connor Tighe was also proving hard to handle, and he had a chance to break the deadlock just before half time. A fine ball from Doug Tuck split the hosts defence, but Tighe was only able to scramble the ball back to the keeper when the goal was gaping.

John Coventry’s men huffed and puffed but the closest they came in the first-half were two off target attempts by Tom Wraight.

They brightened up in the second-half and Higgins, who celebrated his 200th goal for the club in the week, broke through only for visiting keeper Grant Smith to block at his feet.

It looked as though the breakthrough was going to come with just four minutes to go.

Substitute Aaron Morgan went through on goal and appeared to be dragged down inside the box but, after a lengthy delay, the referee awarded a goal-kick and the match ended goalless.
