Carshalton Athletic 3, East Thurrock United 2 FOOTBALL: Rocks were on top for most of this FA Cup second qualifying round replay - but ended up with nothing on a Tuesday night that John Coventry will want to forget.

Again it was the Robins guardian Craig Ross who was key in thwarting East Thurrock.

The first goal came from the penalty spot when Kye Ruel was felled in the box.

Buoyed up by the goal Rocks attacked but, despite his mediocre defence, Ross was always there.

Ruel put the ball in the net but the ref had spotted a hand and the goal did not stand.

Carshalton’s Byron Harrison scored for the home side in the 37th minute following a period of pressure. And then, only four minutes later, Rocks were behind. An unmarked Joel Ledgister looked to be offside, but when the flag stayed down he guided the ball past the Rocks guardian.

At the start of the second Rocks pushed to get back to level pegging.

But when Stanley Muguo gave the ball away cheaply Carshalton found the net again.

Rocks came back with a goal in the 72nd minute, from the penalty spot, after the ref spotted a hand ball in the penalty area. Newby smashed the ball home.

But with the score at 3-2 time slipped away for John Coventry’s men.

To their credit, Rocks battled to the end - but Ross again thwarted.
