ORSETT Sunday 1sts faced Old Southendians in a 40 over friendly at the weekend.

Orsett elected to bat first and were pit on back foot by an accurate opening spell from Old South’s South Africian quick bowler. They lost Lewis Lockyear in the fourth over — with the score on eight.

Nick Henry went on to score 42 assisted by JimEwing (32) and Shahid Khan 51.

Khan’s innings included three of his trademark straight sixes. Skipper Wayne Read then chipped in with swift 47 to bring the score to 196 with Orsett’s last four batsmen all going without scoring.

Old South’s reply was positoive from first over with Steve Harwood and Rob Dodson both getting off to a flier before falling for 75 and 72 respectively.

Tight bowling from Jack Reader, Khan and Sam Proctor then kept the Old South scoring below the run rate.

And although their skipper, Aaron Lucas, put bat to ball Old South fell seven runs short of victory in the 40th over in what was enjoyable and entertaining match. This weekend the 1sts meet Chelmsford at School lane.
