Tilbury 2–1 Tooting & Mitcham United

From Chadfields

FA Trophy first qualifying round

A LATE penalty from Danny Glozier earned Tilbury their place in the next round of the FA Trophy at the expense of nine-man Tooting & Mitcham.

It seemed as though the match was destined to go to a replay next week but Glozier, such a reliable spot kick taker, struck to ensure the Dockers progress and continue their impressive recent form.

The win was Tilbury’s seventh in their last nine games, with the other two draws, although this was a game the home side fell behind in.

The home side started brightly, with Neil Richmond forcing the first save from either goalkeeper, with Matt Pierson tipping his volley aside.

But back came Tooting, with Jake Baxter striking the crossbar before they did take the lead.

Gareth Chendlik put Tooting, of the Ryman One South, ahead eight minutes before the half-time interval with a low drive past Clarke Bogard.

But Tony Martin hit back within two minutes to level the match and continue his good recent form. Emiel Aiken's cross was flicked on by Matt Game and Martin lashed home from the 18-yard box.

The second-half saw both sides exchange chances with Tilbury again pushing the tempo.

Joe Nightingill, Richmond and Game all had efforts that came close to restoring the Dockers' lead with a moment of madness handing gary Henty's side further initiative.

Antoino Simeone was given his marching orders after swinging an arm at striker Harry Cook, and it appeared as though Tilbury had made their man advantage count five minutes later, but Jack Carlile's effort was ruled out for offside.

The game seemed destined for a replay but, in the last minutes, Kurt Smith was tackled from behind and Glozier did the rest from the spot.

Christian Neto received a second yellow in injury-time to compound their misery.

After the match, Henty said: "In the first half we were not our normal selves, but I was delighted with the second half performance and with the way we reacted to going behind."
