Belhus CC first string show true grit in encounter
3:00pm Wednesday 16th July 2014 in Sport
BELHUS showed true grit to post an impressive 33 run victory.
The first string proved that they have the fighting heart of true champions as they counter-punched Billericay to a stunning defeat at the Village Green in North Stifford.
Heavy rain in the days leading up to this 50-over encounter ensured that the hard and bouncy Belhus pitch would also offer lateral movement for the seam bowlers.
This movement was beautifully exploited by Billericay when they elected to field first on a hot and humid afternoon.
The Belhus innings was held together by a gritty innings of 47 from skipper Danny Joyce.
It was an innings which would be easily be equal in value to a century in better batting conditions.
All of the Billericay seam bowlers executed their skills with miserly accuracy and regular penetration which kept the wickets falling.
It would have been easy for Belhus to go into the tea interval with their heads held low as their total of 133 all out looked pitiful.
The required run rate for Billericay was just 2.7 runs per over.
But there was no such defeatism from Belhus.
In fact they attacked from the off as their bowlers – and particularly Connor Day (three wickets) blasted out the visitors for 100 runs ensuring that Belhus achieved another sensational victory by a total of 33 runs.
