GRAYS Shopping Centre has planned a day of celebrations when the Olympic torch comes to the town.

On Friday (July 6) there will be Olympic torch treasure hunts at noon, 2.30pm and 3.30pm, with a bounty of prizes from shops in the centre.

Children will also be able to get their faces painted for free, as well meeting the official Olympic and Paralympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville between 11am and 5pm.

Shoppers can also have their picture taken for a Facebook competition where customers can vote for their favourite image, in conjunction with Max Spielmann photo shop.

A spokesman for the shopping centre said: “It is going to be a day to remember, so make sure you come on down to Grays Shopping Centre, pick up your flag and join in the sporting atmosphere!”

If you’re keen to get closer to the relay itself, you can register as a volunteer for the once-in-a-lifetime event with Ngage.

Volunteers are needed to steward a section of the 3km route, from 2pm to 7pm, and be available for a noon briefing.

Duties could include helping with road closures, keeping the route clear and guiding people to where they can view the procession safely.

The relay starts at 4.59pm in Lodge Lane, travels to Piggs Corner, turning into Southend Road, before heading towards Grays town centre at Palmer’s Avenue, along Orsett Road and London Road, finishing in Hogg Lane.

Julie Rawson, spokesman for Ngage, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in a nationally recognised event that we are honoured to have in Grays.”
