WORK to extend Tilbury Port with a development of offices and warehouses will begin next year after being given the Government seal of approval.

It is expected more than 1,100 jobs will be created from the 30-hectare development of storage warehouses, as well as small offices and a 568-space car park.

Following the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government’s approval of the northern expansion of Tilbury project, work on the site on part of Tilbury Marshes near Dock Road will start mid next year.

Perry Glading, chief operating officer of Forth Ports, said: “By enabling us to develop the additional warehousing, logistics and haulage facilities the port will be able to meet the growing needs of its customers.

“This development will also ensure Tilbury continues to be a leading port distribution hub.

“The port has strong local ties and we will carry on working with the community during construction and future operation of the site.”

Plans were initially given the green light by the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation in June, which will also include a landscaped park as well as a new footpath and cycle track.

It is hoped the development will allow more trade to operate through the port, which is operating at almost full capacity.

Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon and East Thurrock said the expansion project would promote employment growth in the borough.

He said: “This is a major boost for Thurrock and the wider local area.

“Even in challenging economic times, businesses are choosing to expand and locate in Thurrock and the south Essex area.

“The project will help facilitate positive growth for the local economy, which will being regional and national trade and employment opportunities.”

Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price added: “The port at Tilbury is central to the local economy and I am pleased in its 125th year, Tilbury is thriving and looking to the future.”
