POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 13-year-old Grays girl was indecently assaulted in the town.

The incident happened on Saturday 5 August when the teenager was walking along Lenthall Avenue and approached from behind by a man who spoke to her before indecently touching her.

The man then tried to pick the terrified girl up but was scared off when she screamed and ran off. The teenager ran in the opposite direction to her near-by home.

Investigating officer, Pc Nick Luff, said: "This was a terrifying experience for this young girl who is still suffering from shock and who no doubt is even more conscious of her surroundings when in public.

"Hopefully the distinctive description of the man will jog people's memories and we can help allay the teenager's fears."

The assailant is described as white, in his late 30s, of large build and with a shaved head.

He was wearing blue three-quarter length trousers, a white vest and had a gold chain around his neck.

Anyone who can identify the man or who witnessed the assault is urged to contact investigating officers at Grays Police Station on 01375 391212.
