RE: the report of the young child getting scalded due to a newly installed thermostat becoming faulty soon after being fitted (Gazette, June 24), the mother is entirely at fault for the events that unfolded.

All water when about to bathe a child or anybody should be checked before immersion, which the mother should have done and adjusted accordingly. However, if far more cold had to be used to balance the temperature, basic logic should have said there is something wrong?

With the accidental turning on of the shower head, the water would have been a lot cooler to start with, so how long was the delay before the hot came through?

Also, it is basic medical knowledge that a scold should be plunged into cold water immediately, was this done?

Despite all of this her daughter suffered second degree burns and is recovering well. However, if this mishap had not happened to start with, the thought of turning on the shower head to rinse her down after her bath leaves me with the dread of what could have happened – perhaps this mishap was a blessing in disguise. – A KNIGHT, Princess Margaret Road, Tilbury.
