THE councillor in charge of education in Thurrock has paid tribute to retiring “superhead” John King.

Cllr Diana Hale said Mr King, who is giving up his post in charge of Gable Hall and William Edwards schools at Easter, will be missed.

Cllr Hale said: “I have known John King for many years and have real respect for his outstanding contribution to the raising of standards in Thurrock's secondary schools.

“John was already head of Gable Hall when he was asked to weave his magic on my local school, William Edwards.

“I asked him recently what his secret was and he felt it was spotting talent early and mapping a pathway to success - the appointment of Steve Munday as head of William Edwards is a fine example of that strategy.

“I don't want to lose him totally from Thurrock so I hope his retirement isn't too quiet.”
