SO this week we tell how more and more vulnerable families are being shipped out of the borough to live elsewhere in Essex.

Figures are going up and it seems Southend and Basildon are getting the brunt of the homeless people who can’t be looked after, or found homes, here.

I’d suggest that councillor Luke Spillman is maybe going a little too far accusing the council of being “active participants in social cleansing”.

However, fair play to him for bringing this important issue into the light.

The main concern is clearly the well-being of individuals and families.

And, wherever possible those who are born and bred in Thurrock and want to stay here should be given every chance to.

The council should work to make this happen. But the key thing is individuals, and families, involved in troubled times get the help, support, direction and shelter they need to survive.

And, if that’s outside the borough and that’s the best deal for them then that’s what needs to happen, in the short-term at least.

l Just wanted to say a few congratulatory words to the youngsters of the borough who upped the ante again this year in terms of positive results – both in GCSEs and A-levels.

These words are extended to the many hardworking, dedicated and committed headteachers, teachers and staff who day in, day out are determined to make a difference to young lives. Without their efforts the borough would be a poorer place.
