RESIDENTS have backed plans by Thurrock Council to use new powers to tackle street drinking and antisocial behaviour.

The council is planning to bring in a Public Space Protection Order in Grays to deal with the issues.

The council is running a consultation until midnight on Friday, March 10. and is asking for residents’ opinions.

If agreed, the order would give powers to police and council officers to move offenders on and also to fine them.

Maureen Knowles of Seabrooke Rise, Grays said: “I think this is a great idea.

“There are problems in Grays town centre and I think it stops people wanting to shop there.”

Arthur Taylor, of Argent Street, Grays said: “I often go out for a walk and I always see youths with drink and drugs.

“There are also bottles and cans left about on the floor. It’s terrible and has got much worse.”

Sue MacPherson, councillor for neighbourhoods, said: “We all visit Grays at some point, whether it is because we work there, live there, or just pop in for some shopping.

“That’s why it is important for as many people as possible to take part in this consultation – it affects us all.

“Businesses and residents have told us the high street is looking more tidy, which is really welcomed – now it’s time to talk about whether street drinking is appropriate.”

The consultation is available via the council’s website at www.thurrock.gov.uk
