A MAN in his seventies suffered smoke inhalation when a fire broke out in his sheltered accommodation this morning.

The fire service were called to Dexter Close, Grays, at 4.15am to reports of a blaze.

Two crews from Grays fire station attended the scene but reported that the fire was out on arrival.

One rook of the accommodation was still filled with smoke which they cleared.

An ambulance was called and the casualty was left in the care of paramedics.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called at 4.28am and sent an ambulance and rapid response vehicle.

"We treated a man in his seventies for carbon monoxide inhalation, he was conscious and alert.

"He was taken to Basildon Hospital for a check over."

An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.
