Families found in shipping container at Tilbury recovering in centre

THE families who were discovered in the shipping container at the Port of Tilbury on Saturday are “doing much better”, according to a man who acted as a translator for police.

Kamaljit Singh Matharu, a member of Grays Gurdwara, has been assisting the immigrants communicate with authorities since they were found, having arrived on a ship from Zeebrugge.

Some of the families, who are now claiming asylum in the United Kingdom, are now recovering at a residential centre in East Dulwich.

Mr Matharu, who visited the families on Monday, said: “They are quite well and are doing much better. They have checked into the centre in East Dulwich and are being very well looked after.

“They are now hoping to get into more of a normal routine.

“Some of them prefer Indian food, so we are trying to arrange for some of the women to gain access to the local Gurdwara where they can prepare food.”

It is believed the 35 immigrants were fleeing religious persecution in Afghanistan.

Accountant Daljeet Singh Flora, from Grays Gurdwara in Maidstone Road, has met some of the families.

He said: “The situation for the Sikh community in Afghanistan is very tricky. It is difficult for them to practise their faith.

“You have people pulling off their turbans and scarves, people can’t even cremate their loved ones after they pass away.

“It is very troubling and they are desperate to find a better future.”

Secretary of the Gurdwara, Gurdev Singh Kang, added: “These people will not leave behind their homes just for the benefits system.”

A man from Northern Ireland was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter and facilitating illegal entry into the UK.

He is being transferred to Essex today [Wednesday] for questioning.

*Twenty people, believed to be from Kashmir and Eritrea, were treated for dehydration after being found in a lorry near Bristol on Tuesday.

The lorry was heading for Devon.

well of course they are.
something puzzling though, as Sikhs and they wanted to get away from Afghanistan why didn't they slip into India, its nearer and bigger, and you only need to cross pakistan instead of going round the globe in a metal box with risk of death.

Now that is a VERY good post. Why indeed did they not choose India? Alternatively, why did they not make their apparent asylum claims in any of the numerous other countries that they passed through??? What CAN it be that attracts all these migrants to traverse the world to reach our tiny island rather than - as would seem far more appropriate - stopping in the first safe country they reach?? I assume even the resident left-wing / liberals on here would agree that India IS a safe country?? I believe that Sikhs are in the majority in the Punjab??

I really must put my thinking cap on as to why so many people try and get to England. Why on earth can it be??? According to all the resident lefties / liberals on here this is SUCH a horrible Tory-run county. All very strange.

I don't think anyone would be against any genuine asylum claim where you would be fearing for your life on a daily basis, but the many that are fake really do the real ones and themselves no favours and abuse the system, are the saying that every sikh faces this daily how long for the last 1 year, 5 years, 30 years? don't see much in the news about this before, infact never really knew afgan had a sikh population as such i know sikhs stretch far and wide so surely they must have roots in India, and for the sake of their young children they should have took the shortest easiest root to 'freedom', gambling on their Childrens lives is not good.

Probably because it's difficult to open a container from the inside. If you feel you can do better, I have one I'm happy to lock you inside of and you can demonstrate your Houdini skills. I suspect whatever organised gang would have told them whatever they wanted to hear to get their life savings before sealing the container so as to not get customs officials attention (mostly they're physically locked from the outside to prevent petty thievery and people trying to smuggle things in others containers...)

There is no way the container made it Tilbury from Afghanistan to without this container being opened somewhere in between or without these people getting into the container somewhere in between. They are apparently almost air tight. International law says that people should claim asylum in the first safe country they come to. It is beyond coincidence that this is the first country these people got to before they were discovered or were either let out of or entered that container.

They are a small part of the estimated 2 million illegal immigrants in this country. They will never be be deported. Presumably the children and older people will all be getting jobs to support themselves.

It goes without saying why they chose this country. They will join the masses that enure that British people can't afford to buy a house, have to put up with crap healthcare, schools and general quality of life. Part of the reason this country is broke.

So now we will give them asylum, a home, healthcare, schooling and benefits. That is after the hundreds of thousands of pounds that we have already spent on the investigations and services used so far. We really are so soft, or is it stupid? We are taxed something rotten and then the government cut services for us British, send millions of pounds to other countries and fund these "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS". We have ambulance waiting times longer than ever and are told that there are not enough hospital beds, then we are told on the news that ambulances were on the scene at Tilbury within minutes and the people in the container were rushed to hospital. We are becoming a joke country now, an easy option. We need to be like Australia or Canada.

It is believed the 35 immigrants were fleeing religious persecution in Afghanistan. Can someone please ask the interpretor to ask them why they didn't go to the first safe country like the Punjab and/or India or all the other countries they passed through to get to the UK? Accepting these people will encourage thousands more to try the same thing. The government should have treated them, fed them, and put them back on the ferry to Belgium and let them deal with them. Also P&O should pay all their medical fees. Why should the British Taxpayer pay? I find it also incredulous that these people are given everything yet the young lady who lost her leg gets nothing and she's English.
