20,000 sign up for Beat The Street...and walk 25,000 miles in just 10 days

Thurrock Gazette: Barbara Rice taps in her card at a Beat Box Barbara Rice taps in her card at a Beat Box

MORE than 20,000 people are taking part in Beat The Street, the council’s borough-wide health kick game...and they have walked a distance equivalent to trekking round the world!

The real-life walking and cycling game sees participants - in teams - score points and win prizes by walking and tapping cards on sensor boxes dotted about the borough.

The top five teams who score the most points by walking the furthest will share a cash prize for their chosen charity or cause. There are also spot prizes, many donated by local businesses.

Since the scheme started on June 11, 20,000 people have registered cards and already walked 25,000 miles.

Cllr Barbara Rice, portfolio holder for health, said: “I feel so proud of Thurrock. This is such an amazing achievement and we still have another four weeks to go. I urge anyone who hasn’t taken part to get a card today and join in the game. It’s great fun and great for your health.”

See next week’s Thurrock Gazette for the latest standings in the league. If you can’t wait until then, visit: www.thurrock.beatthestreet.me.

Fantastic scheme! getting cars off the road & encouraging exercise. Its just a shame that a few dicks in Corringham have decided to remove the tag readers from their poles.

A more robust anchor system would help.
