EU ELECTIONS: Ukip storms to victory in Thurrock's EU vote
UKIP has stormed to victory in Thurrock's EU vote, taking a whopping 45 per cent of the vote.
Just days after it was announced Ukip had gained five seats on Thurrock Council, it was announced at 10pm that the party topped the borough's EU poll.
Ukip also came out on top in the Eastern region as a whole, taking 35 per cent of the vote.
The Conservatives took 28 per cent, Labour 17 per cent and the Green Party eight per cent.
This means that the Eastern region will be represented in Europe by three Ukip members - including Aveley resident Tim Aker - three Conservative members and one Labour member.
The vote in Thurrock saw Ukip's share of the EU vote rocket from 22 per cent in 2009 to 45 per cent this year.
Labour's vote rose from 18.3 per cent in 2009 to 22.8 per cent in 2014.
Meanwhile, the Conservative's vote share for the EU elections fell from 22.7 per cent in 2009 to 19.5 per cent.
