A MUM from South Ockendon has been jailed after admitting not sending her three children to school.

The 40-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a 52-day sentence at Basildon Magistrates Court yesterday in respect of her 15 and 16-year-old.

The court also imposed a 12 month conditional discharge as a result of her seven-year-old missing school.

The court heard the 16-year-old had not been at school at all in one 100-day period. The 15-year old attended 42 sessions out of 88 and the seven-year-old went to 90 sessions out of 128.

The family have been known to Thurrock Council’s Education Welfare Service since 2008.

The mother had also been prosecuted last year when magistrates imposed a suspended prison sentence, which was activated yesterday.

This is the third time Thurrock Council has prosecuted the mother for the older children, and the first time for the seven-year-old.

This does not solve the problem; so the kids now have no mother as well as not going to school.

"You can miss out school (won't that be cool)! Why go to learn the words of fools"? (The Small Faces).

According to the age old adage, school days are supposed to be the best of your life’! Are they today in sunny Thurrock?

What fun is there in our ‘Exam Factories’? The pressure on teenagers to gain ‘qualifications’
, primarily to secure a lofty league table status for their Academy is immense and non-sustainable! In affect, children are starting work at 12 years of age!

In Australia, they don’t even know what a ‘school refuser’ actually is! Our Antipodean cousins create learning environments that provide ‘education’! If families decide not to send their offspring to receive this ‘service’, it’s their loss…the onus to attend is placed on mum’s, dad’s, carers and the children themselves, not the poor old school!

Why is so much money wasted on Attendance Officers, E.W.Os and court cases?

Legend has it, that in Africa, children trudge countless miles and swim across rivers daily, just to ensure they receive their schooling…they know the difference ‘education’ will make to their lives!

“Don’t learn…won’t earn”! (Gilbert 2006).

School gives you daily routine for life, whilst they may push you to do things you don't this is exactly the same as a working life. Staying at home prepares you for a life on state benefits and generally being a drain on society.

The court costs is nothing compared to a life spent on Welfare, what if they went to school did well and got an executive job and paid 40% Tax back into the community?

Basic English, maths and social skills are essential in getting on in life and I like many other people learnt this in the Thurrock education system.

I'm not sure jail was the right decision maybe 6 months hard labor to picking up rubbish around thurrock to see what happens to people with no ambition and no education.
