IS THIS the solution to dodgy and dangerous parking outside Thurrock’s primary schools?

Bulphan Primary School launched its Park and Stride scheme on Monday, which encourages parents and children to park in the car park at Bulphan Village Hall and walk 500 metres down the road to the school.

Julie Cooper, Thurrock Council’s Road Safety Project Co-ordinator was on hand to help.

For the first week, pupils have been given a “passport” and if they walk from home or from the village hall, their passport will be stamped. At the end of the week, any children with 10 stamps receive a prize.

A spokesperson for the school said: “We hope this scheme reduces congestion outside the school and makes the journey to school safer for the whole community.”

But surely it just moves the problem elsewhere. OK Bulphan has a car park nearby that can be used, but not all schools have this AND Bulphan is a very small school, it not even a one class entry. Try applying this to a school that is one class entry, that's potentially 100 vehicles (based on the fact that half will always walk) to park somewhere. When you have 2 or 3 class entry, it becomes less and less of a good idea. The question is in the afternoon when the village hall might be being used, will there be enough space for the parents to use?
While on the face of it a good idea is it really practical?
