People power saves Mardyke horses

Thurrock Gazette: Delighted – councillor Lynn Carr is happy to see the horses moved at last Delighted – councillor Lynn Carr is happy to see the horses moved at last

PEOPLE power has led to Thurrock Council making a dramatic U-turn on its decision to allow horses to stay in the heavily-flooded Mardyke Valley.

About 40 animals will be moved following extreme pressure from campaigners, who gathered 6,000 signatures for their petition in just one day.

The council has changed its mind on the suitability of the ground alongside the A13 and M25.

Grazing on the council-owned floodplain will now stop between November and March each year.

Horses will be taken away as soon as a suitable new location is found, though no time frame has been given.

The campaigners’ petition gained 8,475 names in total.

Sue Allery, chairman of the Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society, is delighted.

She said: “All we were asking for was a solution during the winter months which kept these horses safe. During the winter we get inundated with calls about the Mardyke.

“We said ‘please arrange something so the horses are safe’. It all got a bit silly in the end, but thankfully it is being dealt with.”

Sue Burton, manager at the Remus Horse Sanctuary, in Ingatestone, added: “We’re absolutely thrilled. We wanted to get something done before there was a serious accident. This is something everyone has worked so hard for.”

Tory councillor Lynn Carr was also pleased. She said: “This was always about the welfare of the horses. The calls taken every winter by the welfare organisations and the RSPCA, the police, fire service and council were overwhelming. This had to be addressed.”

A council spokesman said: “With immediate effect, it has been agreed the floodplain area will not be grazed on during the winter months.

“The horses will be removed and relocated as soon as a suitable alternative location has been found.

“The RSPCA has confirmed there are no immediate significant welfare issues for the horses.”

Its just a shame you will not see our Tory councillor helping out at a food bank or shouting this loud about pensioners living in damp houses with health issues...typical another bandwagon to jump on......are the 6000 people that signed that petition going to pay for the moving of these horses?
Its going to cost £1000's and it will come out of council funds. So don't moan to loud when your rubbish hasn't been emptied... I love horses, but humans come first.

Hog.............have you ever contacted Cllr Lynn Carr regarding any damp issues? Do you have any issues? If you do I challenge you to contact her and see what happens. Cllr Lynn Carr has been like a breath of fresh air we have never had a Cllr who cares as much about her community as she does, she will not back down from what is right, not even the Aveley Cllr's got involved so where is their backbone? You mentioned about humans coming before animals, were there any humans I am not aware of that were in danger of drowning? Two horses had died in the last 6 months the RSPCA told me so how many more would you be prepared to see die before someone made the council enforce the movement of these horses, which by the way is not being paid for by the council but by the horse owners. What on earth made you think that? Very strange. Also Hog have you seen how many people do not agree with your comment? You really are in the minority lol!!

Hog sounds like your typical armchair critic. I agree with Benny16. Don't sit there moaning about an issue, contact the Council. If you have no joy, contact Councillor Lynn Carr. This lady works tirelessly to help constituents in not only her Ward, but others too. And unfortunately, like a lot of people, you have put two and two together and made ten! Who said the tax payer was picking up the bill to move the horses? On a similar note, see the article in the Gazette today about the horse that died in the same location. If you knew how many times the welfare folk, Police and Fire Brigade have dealt with and still deal with these ongoing issues which all take up an inordinate amount of time and resources, your hair would stand on end. You are entitled to your opinion of course Hog, we live in a democracy after all, but uninformed criticism is no use to anyone.

HOG ..I feel I must address your very scathing attack on Councillor Lynn Carr, She works very very hard and tirelessly for the residents in Ockendon who have issues with their housing.Whether that be damp, mould, glass where it shouldn't be, health and safety issues, houses being let without relevant checks and repairs.Regardless of age, gender or disability, this wonderful lady (who also works full time) is always at the end of the phone, email or text, even when she is ill she doesn't stop trying to get things sorted for us tenants!!
Anyone who has a problem who contacts Councillor Carr, gets action; so if you have a problem I suggest you contact Councillor Carr because she DOES care about her constituents and works tirelessly for and with them.
i myself have been dealing with her since i moved into my property and she has got a list of issues as long as my arm sorted that should have been sorted whilst the property was void and in the 3 MONTHS i was kept waiting for the property after i accepted it!! Your attitude is judgemental and wrong and you should apologise to Councilor Carr for what you have said about her, as anyone who has had dealings with her knows she is for the people of not only her ward but other wards too!!!
This woman deserves a medal for all the tireless and hard work she does for her constituents, and I, personally , hope that she will continue to do so for a very long time to come.I cant thank Councillor Carr enough for all she has done for me.
As for the horses, Councillor Carr has done something that has needed doing for many, many years and its something that the Aveley Councillor hasnt even nbothered to do!! The people said they wanted something done to save the horses and she stood up and did something.....good for her!!! As for the cost; no one has said it will be at the tax payers expense, however you are forgetting that its at the tax payers expense whenever the police, welfare, fire brigade etc are called out to deal with one of these horses!!
YOU are in a minority with your bigoted views HOG; just look at how many people have given you the thumbs down! Your uninformed comments are no good in a democracy, you need to get your facts straight before posting them !

Well said steph3467. If we had more Councillors with a quarter of the backbone and passion as Councillor Carr, the County would be a better place for all! I have seen this lady in action and believe me, she really does fight for the cause at the time. We need a Prime Minister of this calibre. She'd sort this Country out in no time.
