WORKERS at the Tarmac Building Products factory in Linford have served notice for strike action.

Staff at the plant, which specialises in forming and cutting concrete blocks for the building industry, are unhappy that six workers were employed on lower pay and with less stringent terms and conditions, despite doing the same work as other employees on the site.

Up to 40 workers have voted to strike on three consecutive Wednesdays, starting on September 18.

Managers at the plant on Buckingham Hill Road have already improved the pay and contract conditions of three of the six workers taken on recently, but unless they agree to improve the situation for the other three workers during talks today, factory workers will walk out next week.

Regional officer for Unite the Union, Guy Langston, said: "We have just served notice on the company for three one-day strikes starting next Wednesday and for the following two Wednesdays.

"If the situation is not resolved, we may ramp up the action.

"Unite have recognition at the plant and the company are trying to undermine it by bringing in individuals on lower pay and lower terms and conditions. We have demanded that everyone is on the same pay and brought under our collective bargaining.

"There are six workers in total, the company has agreed to bring three level on pay with other workers at the site, but there are three outstanding. Hopefully it will get resolved."
