MORE than 13,000 people travelled to this year’s fun-filled and action-packed Orsett Show.

Families from miles around turned out to support the annual charity event, which went bigger and better than ever before.

The show boasted a number of exciting shows including the Bulldog ‘Lings’ Freestyle team and the Chariots of Fire display team, whose spectacular shows had the crowds on their feet.

There was also plenty for the youngsters to do with a circus skills workshop, donkey and pony rides, and helicopter rides around the showground in Rectory Road.

Large stuffed animals were on offer in a variety of games and competitions for revellers and there was music provided by the Harmonie concert band.

There were more than 100 trade stalls selling crafts and foods as well as information on local events.

One of the main attractions was Owls ‘R’ Us, the owl handling team from Shoebury. A flock of people surrounded the bird enclosure to see species from across the world.

Breeds including the enormous Canadian Great Horned Eagle Owl, named Maple, to the miniscule British Little Owl, Ash, were more than happy to spend several minutes perched on onlookers’ hands.

Sandra Cole, supervisor at Owls ‘R’ Us, said: “We always enjoy coming to the Orsett Show and there are always a great many people interested in what we do.

“Our bird handlers are constantly on the move and they often don’t get a couple of minutes to have lunch.

“The owls are all very popular and enjoy being in the spotlight.”

Dave Butcher came to watch the event with partner Jacky Townsend and children Lily, Luke and Lauren.

He said: “We think it is great here. The turnout is always very good and there is so much to do that there is something for everyone.

“Lauren likes the horses and the rest of us really enjoy the stunt shows. A bit of danger is always quite exciting. We are already looking forward to next year.”

There were also steam engines from yesteryear and vintage cars, which drew plenty of admiring glances.

Pat Astell-Wood, honorary general secretary of Orsett Show, said: “It was a great day out for all.

“When we organise the show we have to have something for everyone and we have done that this year.

“We always have different events and are keen to introduce more animals.

“As a self-financing organisation we have to raise money through sponsorship. We raised over £20,000 this year, but could do with some more volunteers for next year.
