Tory Nick Alston wins race to become Essex police commissioner

THE deputy leader of Thurrock Council, Val Morris-Cook, has lost in her bid to become the police and crime commissioner for Essex.

Tory Nick Alston won the election following a nail-biting count in Chelmsford.

Ms Morris-Cook won the vote in Thurrock and in Harlow, but failed to win in any of the other 14 Essex districts.

Mr Alston polled 51,325 votes and was in first place, with Independent Mick Thwaites in second place, polling 40,312 votes.

But because Mr Alston failed to get 50 per cent of the vote, second preference votes were counted, making the contest a two-horse race between the Conservative and independent candidate.

Ms Morris-Cook was third after the first count, polling just under 28,000 first preference votes.

In the end, Mr Alston was declared winner, polling 62,350 votes and Mr Thwaites received 58,664.

Thurrock had the lowest turnout in Essex, with just 10.2 per cent of the electorate voting. The county turnout was 13.06 per cent.

Here here Cvh When you think that in the Middle East many people are dying horribly for just a fraction of the freedoms that we take for granted it makes me wonder.Consider this. One local candidate belongs to English Democrats (allied with Russian right wing group Russky Obraz) If you like BNP you'd love ED and RO. If you don't and the candidate had got in due to the poor turnout then you could share the blame.
We get the government we deserve and freedoms are dearly won and easily lost. Old sayings and never more true than now.

Chief constable of Cumbria police suspended over claims of 'serious misconduct' "Hillsborough: Police cover-up 'known for years" Now there's the kind of self-regulating professionals good ol' ThurrockBob loves.
We needed a winner who had NO police connections and we haven't got one. But at least we didn't get racists. That would have been ironic given the drive to de-prejudice beat police.

Are you as foul-mouthed and ignorant in most of your life? Try to be a little less uncouth. You come across as a bitter and sad old person - whether you're old or not. You're not the type that most people would want to debate with because you're far too verbally aggressive. Well I'm off, to do something more useful so you can rant on to your heart's content. Bye sucker.

On your less than insightful point on the English Democrats, if it's not flying the red banner with the good old hammer and sickle on it's got to be a Nazi party right?

That is what you were getting at wasn't it?

The leftists need that 'other' to give themselves a reason to exist. If you're not with them you've surely got to be against them and the only persons against our glorious comrades have to be Nazi's.

Just a thought on the Middle East point... they must not like democracy that much considering who they've been voting in lately....
