SPEEDWAY: Will Pottinger was pleased with a point after the Lakeside Hammers were edged out 46-44 in a Championship Shield clash at Peterborough.

Nick Morris, battling illness, teamed up with Adam Ellis for a last race maximum which secured the crucial consolation point.

“It’s a good result considering we were 12 points down at one point and we could have even come away with a win but for a couple of moments of ill fortune,” said Pottinger.

“Making a comeback from that many points down shows great resolve by all the riders. It’s a point that could prove to be very important.

“We’re looking forward to our matches with Ipswich and getting some more points on board.”

Lakeside provided all the last five race winners, with three from Morris – who took Heats 11 and 13 with his partner at the rear – while Zach Wajtknecht and Ellis reduced the arrears to eight with maximum points in Heat 12.

Kyle Newman, Morris and Ellis duly secured a Lakeside 5-1 to notch a point.

New number one Nick Morris won the season-opening Lee Richardson Spring Classic.

The new Hammers top four reached the final at the Arena-Essex Raceway with Aussie ace Morris taking victory ahead of Ellis, Richard Lawson and Kyle Newman.

*Hammers are set to take on Ipswich in a home and away doubler-header on Good Friday.
