BOWLS: EGHAM TROPHY: Tilbury 81-86 Ipswich.
This twice weather postponed match finally took place and was a very close exiting game. At home John Barnes’ team had to fight hard to take the lead, and hold it throughout the game, finally winning by nine shots in a very well fought match. Elaine Scarborough’s squad were drawn against John Rednall, with his very young teenage son and daughter in his team, and they acquitted themselves very well.
Ipswich drew away to be 6 up at five ends, Tilbury fought back to be just one down at fifteen ends, but still lost in the close game by just three shots. Away Brian Henry’s four had a close game, ends changing continuously, holding lead, then losing it and at 15 ends were level at 13 all. Level again at 18 ends before losing by just one shot. Graham Pereira’s team started with 17 shots scored over the first five ends, one down, stayed with Ipswich to be just three down at ten ends, then Ipswich pulled away and we were ten down at eighteen ends, and holding that difference at 21 ends. Losing overall by just five shots at this stage of the competition is very disappointing, but reaching the last sixteen in the country is an excellent attempt.
