FOOTBALL: DANNY Scopes said his side’s late equaliser against Billericay on Tuesday evening was the least they deserved from a game they should have won.

Concord needed an 84th minute header from Steve King to earn a point against a visiting Town side who had taken a 41st-minute lead through Ryan Edgar’s opportunistic strike.

It stretched Rangers’ unbeaten run to five, and left Town still searching for their first away win of the season.

Scopes said: “We were the better team on the night and I believe we should have won.

“We went one down against the run of play, but we got stronger as the second half went on and we were the only side that looked like scoring.

“Then we got level and had four chances to win it late on.

“So overall I was pleased with our performance, but a bit disappointed we didn’t take our chances and all three points.”

It capped a decent 48 hours for Concord after they were given the league’s Team Performance of the Month award for their 3-0 away win against Hastings United.

Elsewhere in the Ryman Premier, CANVEY picked up a brilliant point as they became the first team this season to come away undefeated from a trip to league-leaders Lowestoft Town.

Lee McGlone put the hosts in front, but Canvey equalised through Jay Curran.

The Gulls then hit the post twice and almost won it late on, but Matt Game's shot was saved.

Canvey have also been boosted by news that 28-year-old winger Alex Rhodes has signed a contract with the club until the end of the season.

And AVELEY capped a fine night for our local sides in the division as they came away from Harrow Borough with a 2-1 win. Orlando Smith and Kurt Smith scored for the Millers, either side of a Ryan Watts’ strike for the hosts.

But EAST THURROCK’S recent slump continued as they lost 2-1 in a Ryman Division One North match with Wingate & Finchley. Rocks’ goal came from debutant Hakeem Araba, who has just signed from Billericay.

In Essex Senior Cup matches, HULLBRIDGE SPORTS beat FC Clacton 4-3 after extra time. And SOUTHEND MANOR went out 4-3 on penalties to Eton Manor.

The game had finished 2-2.

Yesterday’s draw for our local teams in the Essex Senior Cup was: Wivenhoe v Grays; Canvey v Harlow; Southend v Barking; Bowers & Pitsea v Brentwood; Tilbury v Aveley; Hullbridge Sports v Redbridge; London APSA or Basildon United v Billericay; East Thurrock v Waltham Abbey; Great Wakering v Waltham Forest; and Concord v Thurrock.
