STEVE Butterworth has called on Great Wakering Rovers to be more clinical after missing a number of clear-cut chances in the 4-2 win over Cambridge City.

Although Yaw Ofosu gave Cambridge an early lead, Wakering responded with a Jake Gordon brace along with efforts from Kojo Apenteng and Billy Johnson before Luke Knight grabbed a late second goal for the hosts.

But Wakering player-manager Butterworth felt his side should have won the Isthmian North contest by a more convincing margin.

“We hit the crossbar twice and missed four one-on-ones,” said Butterworth.

“I think, on a very bad pitch, we played some great stuff.

“We changed our shape to match up with them because when we last played against a side set up in a diamond, we were overrun early on.

“Jack Stevenson was told to drop deeper and get on the ball, which got us ticking over.

“That led to us creating lots of chances but we missed some great opportunities and need to be more clinical.

“Martin Tuohy missed from six yards with a header and getting the second goal eased a bit of pressure and we could have scored a lot more.

“We conceded a second goal with the last kick of the game and that was disappointing as well.”

Cambridge broke the deadlock inside nine minutes through Ofosu, but their lead did not last long as Gordon equalised three minutes later.

And Wakering turned the game on its head with two goals in the space of three second half minutes.

Apenteng grabbed his second goal for the club following his move from Barking before Gordon completed his brace.

Johnson added his name to the scoresheet as the clash ticked into the 90th minute and Knight claimed a late second goal for Cambridge.

Only three Isthmian North fixtures were played at the weekend but Butterworth feels Wakering’s trip to the Glassworld Stadium should have also been postponed.

“The game shouldn’t have been played,” added Butterworth, whose side are now eighth in the standings.

“A pitch inspection didn’t take place and the pitch wasn’t good.

“It would have been best if the game had been postponed because of the pitch, but at least we got the three points.

“I had to make a late change to our line-up because Reece Conway was due to start but was stuck in traffic.

“That meant I had to tell Billy Johnson to play at left-back 15 minutes before kick-off, so the preparation for the game wasn’t great either.”
