Banter with Burns with Colchester United Supporters Association chairman Jon Burns

AFTER a fixture-filled hectic start to the season, the U’s have been able to pause for breath this week and take a proper look at the one area that needs attention if this campaign is going to be a successful one.

The difference between mid table and top table and we all know what it is – scoring goals.

Allegedly the hardest thing to do in football is putting the ball in the back of the net, so what have the U’s got in their locker to make it happen?

Well, as I mentioned last week, plenty of attacking talent that should cause John McGreal plenty of selection headaches.

How many out and out centre forwards have we got though?

Luke Norris is in that mould and so too Theo Robinson.

When Frank Nouble joined a big thing was made about him being freed from his previous wide roles to play in his happiest position down the middle.

He’s not getting that too often these days but will it bring out the best from him if he did?

The League Two stats have Courtney Senior as by far the most successful dribbler this season.

That is certainly why he gets fouled so much, if the referee sees it that way of course – last Saturday for example.

How to harness his threat and put goals on the end of it? Too often during the Walsall game did promising attacks fall away clumsily, so do things need a change with the Gambin improved arsenal sitting on the bench?

McGreal may have to upset a few in the process but that’s football.

At the back, clean sheets are looking easy to come by with our unsung heroes doing their jobs very well indeed.

I would love to see Tom Eastman itching to stride 50 yards forward with the ball to launch a rocket at goal but for now I am quite happy for him where he is.

It’s the delights of Forest Green today and they are also finding goals hard to come by, although they are sadly four points better off.

Will this be the game where it all clicks for the U’s and we bang in a hatful of goals? Let’s hope so.

This is a popular trip for U’s fans if you can cope with the vegan facilities.

Terracing of course and hopefully the onion bhajis and organic beers will still be available outside for us to enjoy.

Safe journey all and good luck U’s today and then again at Swindon next Tuesday night - fixtures continue to come thick and fast.
