BILLERICAY Town midfielder Sam Deering is in contention to make his return to action this weekend.

Town are set to welcome St Albans City to the Steel Team Stadium tomorrow and will then visit Hemel Hempstead Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

And boss Harry Wheeler confirmed Deering is likely to play some part over the course of the weekend.

Wheeler said: “Sam has come through a full week of training, so that is good news.

“With us having two games in a short space of time, he is likely to play some part over the course of the weekend.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say he is fully fit though, so we won’t be throwing him straight into the starting line-up.

“We don’t want to rush him back because we have made that mistake before with him.

“Sam is such a talented player that you want to see him on the pitch, but if we play him too soon then it could put him further back and result in us being without him for an even longer spell.”

St Albans will make the trip to Billericay having failed to register a single victory from their first five outings of the National League South campaign.

And Wheeler is looking forward to being back on home soil following the 1-1 draw at Hampton & Richmond Borough.

“I know St Albans well and their manager, Ian Allinson, has always done a good job there,” added Wheeler.

“It will be a good game which is very competitive, but we’re looking forward to being back at home.

“We want to get back to winning ways and it is always great when you have the crowd behind you.

“But our decision making needs to be better on and off the ball.

“We can’t afford to let teams in because teams like St Albans will profit from that and capitalise.

“If we cut out the lifelines we are giving teams because of our poor decisions, it will make our job easier and our opponents’ job harder.

“I’m hoping that teams may start to make poor decisions against us and so the roles will reverse, allowing us to profit.

“It would be good if those sort of situations swung our way.”

Wheeler was also pleased to spend more time on the training pitch this week.

“It’s nice to have had a full week of training for the first time since the season started,” admitted Wheeler.

“Everyone has tired bodies because of the games coming thick and fast.

“But we go into the weekend better organised.”
