POLICE have called on fans of Grays Athletic and York City who were present at the recent match between the two clubs to come forward if they saw in the incident in which York player Chris Beardsley suffered a broken jaw.

Grays player Jamie Stuart was sent off by match referee David Phillips following the off-the-ball incident and he has subsequently been arrested and released on police bail.

Mr Phillips has also been interviewed by police, as has Beardsley after the cops' attention was brought to the matter by York City officials.

Now any witnesses at the match, at Grays' New Rec ground on Saturday, September 22, are being asked to tell of what they saw.

Det Con Danny Carter, based at South Ockendon, said: "I would like to hear from anyone who was at the match and witnessed the incident."

He can be contacted on 01708 852332.

Stuart received a three match Football Association ban after the incident and has yet to play for the club since. His suspension ends after Saturday's match against Exeter and he will be available for selection against Weymouth next Tuesday.

Grays have refused to comment on the incident, saying they wish to consider all the evidence before they make a statement.
