TWO Thurrock boxers will be bidding to become national champions this weekend.

Charwell St Mary’s Klayden Russell-Meade and Corringham’s Kieran Desmond will be boxing for the golden gloves in the finals of the National Amateur Boxing Championships.

Russell-Meade, 15, who trains at Chadwell St Mary Boxing Club, will take on Bobby Faulkner of Manchester’s North Side ABC in the 50kg Class A final.

His sparring partner Kieran Desmond, 16, who is part of the Thames Gateway ABC, will fight Ibrahim Nadim of Bury ABC in Bristol, in the 48kg Class B final.

The two boys’ coaches have gone the extra mile to get them to national level by having them train together.

Chico Bates of Thames Gateway, who looks after Desmond, and Scot Johnston of Chadwell St Mary, who trains Russell-Meade have got the boys sparring and running in order to beat the best.
