Residents on a street in South Ockendon had maggots appearing in their bins as they were collected a week late.
The green bins in Dent Close, South Ockendon, were collected on Tuesday August 1 - exactly a week after they were due to be taken.
The green disposal bins are for general waste such as non-recyclable packaging, plastic bags and pet excrement.
All bins within Thurrock Council's remit are supposed to be collected once a week, with Dent Close's collection day for green bins being a Tuesday.
But the residents of this street waited a fortnight before their waste was taken away.
Michelle Kirby, 47, who lives in Dent Close, said: "Our green bin was so full we used the blue one as we have foxes and did not want rubbish over the pavements.
"We had a big down pour of rain and maggots appeared in green bin.
"It was shocking and disgusting."
A spokesperson for Thurrock Council said: "There was a delay to the collection in South Ockendon last week due to an unforeseen issue. The bins were all collected this week as normal."
