The change means customers will pay £21.99 more a year, representing an increase of almost 58 per cent.

Amazon has been contacting subscribers to warn them about the upcoming change, with an email dated August 5 stating that the new price will apply to their next renewal.

The email, sent by Amazon Kids+, said: “The price of the annual Kids+ subscription for Prime members will change from £38.00 to £59.99.”

Amazon told customers that “no further action is required”, while subscribers can manage or cancel their membership through their Amazon account.

Amazon Kids+ price rise: What families get and how much it costs now

The subscription service is aimed at children aged between three and 12 and gives youngsters access to thousands of pieces of ad-free content across compatible devices.

But with Amazon changing its subscription charges, parents may want to take a fresh look at what they are actually getting for their money before signing up.

How much does Amazon Kids+ cost?

Paid monthly, Amazon Kids+ currently costs £6.99 a month for Amazon Prime members and £7.99 a month for customers without Prime, once any introductory free trial has ended.

That means a non-Prime customer paying monthly would spend almost £96 a year, while a Prime member paying monthly would spend almost £84 a year.

The annual Kids+ membership, which can reduce the average monthly cost, is going up from £38 to £59.99.

What do you get with Amazon Kids+?

Amazon Kids+ includes access to thousands of ad-free books, games, apps, videos, podcasts, music and child-friendly Alexa experiences across compatible devices.

That means the service is designed to cover several types of children's entertainment rather than simply providing access to an e-book or video library.

The exact selection can vary depending on the child's age, the device being used and the family's location.

Amazon uses age filters to determine which content appears within each child's profile. Parents can also adjust these settings and block individual titles they do not want their children to access.

This could be particularly useful for families with younger children, as parents can have more control over what appears in their child's Kids+ profile.

Parents took to family forum Mumsnet to discuss the app, with one saying: "We have for our 8 and 4 year olds. I think it's really good. No in-app purchases and you can put their age in so only age appropriate things come up."

Another added: "My 10 year old has a kids kindle but its slow, clunky, and she's growing out of the amazon kids content."

How many children can use Amazon Kids+?

Families can create up to four child profiles within an Amazon Household.

Each profile can have its own age settings, time limits and access permissions.

That means parents with children of different ages do not necessarily have to give every child access to exactly the same selection of content.

As with any subscription, parents should consider how often their children actually use the service before committing to another recurring household expense.
