A new tool has been launched to help teach motorists how to sort common car issues and save them hundreds in the long run.
Motoring provider Halfords has teamed up with MoneySuperMarket to help encourage motorists to feel more confident carrying out car maintenance.
The tool offers step-by-step guidance for basic vehicle fixes, helping drivers decide when they can handle a job themselves and when it’s safer to seek professional help.
A survey of 2,000 drivers by Halfords found that while 71% are comfortable topping up screenwash and 65% can adjust tyre pressure, confidence drops significantly with more complex or emergency repairs.
Andy Turbefield, motoring expert at Halfords, said: "We know that for a lot of drivers, the engine bay can feel like a bit of a mystery, and that's exactly the confidence gap we're trying to close by teaming up with MoneySuperMarket on this tool.
"Simple jobs like checking your oil, or correcting your tyre pressure take minutes and will save your wallet.
"But not only that, we want to inspire the nation to get more hands-on with their cars, because understanding your vehicle also means you're more likely to spot the early warning signs of a problem before it becomes bigger and more expensive."
Despite low confidence, 58.5% of respondents said they would feel more independent if they could manage basic car issues themselves.
What does the tool help drivers to fix?
The tool not only breaks down instructions on how to complete simple maintenance tasks, but also alerts users when a job is better left to professionals.
It can give advice on changing a tyre, jump-starting a car, replacing a windscreen wiper blade and much more.
Drivers can try out the tool on MoneySuperMarket.
Halfords and MoneySuperMarket have also highlighted some specific savings that can be made by using it.
The above table represents an estimated saving of £269.81.
Mr Turbefield added: "That's why the tool doesn't just teach you how to carry out basic fixes; it's also designed to flag when a job is best left to the experts.
"In those cases, it'll point drivers straight to their local Halfords, where our technicians can get the job done safely and affordably."

He also highlighted Halfords’ mobile servicing options for those unable to visit a garage.
Mr Turbefield said drivers can "use Halfords Mobile Servicing, where an expert will come straight to your doorstep or workplace, and tend to your vehicle."
