A SECONDARY school which has been in special measures for two years has finally had the tag removed.

The Grays School Media Arts College, in Hathaway Road, Grays, was placed under special measures in June 2007 because, according to Ofsted, the school was “failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education”.

But it was visited on September 16 and 17 by Ofsted inspectors and recieved confirmation on Friday, October 2, that it was now out of special measures.

According to a statement from the school, inspectors visited the school three times in the last year and found they were making good progress in areas identified for improvement.

Headteacher Lynn Ibeji said: “The school has risen to recent challenges and I am delighted we have gained recognition for our substantial achievements. Everyone has worked together incredibly hard to turn this school around and I would like to thank everyone for making this good Ofsted report possible.

“This is not the end of our journey for improvement, as we are determined to do everything we can to put our young people first and further drive up education standards in Thurrock.”

According to a statement made by the school, “teaching is now far more consistent and teachers are now delivering good lessons based on the needs and abilites of the students”.

Parent governor Karen Boyles said: “Everyone at the school has pulled together to bring the school out of special measures.

“They have shown great determination, skill and tenacity.

“I am so proud of the way the staff and pupils have risen to the challenge and continue to strive towards excellence.”

Oftsed would not confirm to the Gazette that the school was out of special measures.

A report was, however, due to go live on the Ofsted website this week confirming the news.
