STUDENTS at William Edwards School and Sports College enjoyed a recent visit from two top athletes.

Former world indoor 400 metres champion and Olympic silver medallist Jamie Baulch and European gold medallist Matt Elias visited the school as a result of the William Edwards’ connection with the Superschools organisation.

Jamie won silver in the 4 x 400 metres at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and has since won a host of medals both individually and as a team.

In 2002, with Matt Elias, he won gold in the European Championships in Munich.

Currently he is the spirit coach to Bradford Bulls as well as the Manager of Welsh rugby legends Lee Byrne, Shane Williams and Mike Phillips.

He is also the coach of colleague Matt Elias.

The athletes did a question and answer session with questions ranging from drugs to relay tactics.

Each received a commemorative picture of the school to remind them of a great day.

Deputy headmaster Ralph Henderson M.B.E, said: “We are so privileged to have this wonderful connection.

“Every year we are inspired by great athletes. Jamie and Matt are an amazing “double act” and all of the students paid them the greatest respect.”
