A Bangladeshi and Indian takeaway has been named the best in the UK at this year's "Curry Oscars".

Kaani Kaana in Upminster won both Essex Takeaway of the Year and National Takeaway of the Year at the 2026 Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards on October 12.

TV news anchor Samantha Simmonds and comedian Paul Sinha hosted the ceremony at the London Hilton on Park Lane.

Kaani Kaana has branches in Buckhurst Hill, Upminster and Chelmsford, and its Chelmsford restaurant won National Takeaway of the Year at last year’s ARTA awards.

The Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards celebrate the best of the UK’s Asian restaurant and takeaway sector.

The awards honour businesses, chefs and hospitality professionals across the country’s diverse food industry.

Mohammed Munim, founder and CEO of ARTA, said: "Heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists of ARTA 2026.

"Their dedication, creativity and commitment to excellence continue to raise standards across the UK’s Asian restaurant and takeaway sector.

"This industry represents far more than food.

"It is an integral part of multicultural Britain, supporting communities, creating employment and bringing extraordinary culinary experiences to diners across the country."

More than 1,250 businesses were nominated for this year’s awards.

A public nomination process assessed food quality, service and value for money before selecting the finalists and winners.

Judges also considered Google and Tripadvisor reviews and food hygiene ratings.

ARTA also works with educational institutions to support aspiring chefs and strengthen the hospitality industry’s future.

Mr Munim said at last night’s event: “We gather at an important time for hospitality.

"Despite continued customer demand, restaurants across the UK face significant pressures from rising employment costs, food prices, energy bills and other operating costs.

“Yet independent businesses continue to invest in quality, their teams and the customer experience.

"That resilience, creativity and determination deserve to be recognised and celebrated."

Other Essex winners included Kelvedon Spice, which was named Essex Restaurant of the Year.

Kusturi Indian Restaurant in Colchester won both Essex Chef of the Year and National Chef of the Year.

The ARTA gala brings together businesses and industry professionals to celebrate Asian hospitality’s contribution to the UK’s economy, communities and multicultural identity.

Other Essex finalists included Moonlight Tandoori in Harlow, Crown of India in Loughton and Pink Chilliz on Canvey.
