The Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex has praised the handling of the Highlands Farm explosion and fire, describing it as one of the biggest emergency responses seen in the county in recent years.
Joel Charles said the blaze, which spread quickly through several industrial units in East Hanningfield, caused significant damage and presented a serious risk to first responders as 100 firefighters were deployed at its peak, with crews from London and Suffolk providing cover across the rest of Essex.
He said there is still ongoing activity to bring the fire under control at the farm site, but the area is now surrounded and being monitored, and the immediate danger to the public has been addressed by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.
Charles highlighted the "huge amount of courage and professionalism" shown by firefighters, control room operators, police officers, and ambulance staff, saying their skill and dedication ensured the operational deployment and management of the scene was "exceptional."

The Deputy PFCC confirmed that all firefighters taken to hospital following the incident have been discharged and that ongoing welfare support will be provided as a priority, acknowledging that an incident on this scale will have an impact on those who responded.
He thanked local residents for their patience and understanding while work at the site continues, noting "wide public concern" among those living nearby.
Charles said a full investigation into what happened is already under way and has the full support of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
He added that what had been witnessed overnight was "highly trained members of the emergency services doing all they can to keep Essex residents safe," and said he was sure the county is grateful for everything they have done and will continue to do.
