FIREFIGHTERS tackled a late night blaze on the fifth floor of a block of flats in south Essex.
Residents were advised to "stay put" as six crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident in Godman Road, Chadwell St Mary in Grays.
Just before midnight, the service confirmed firefighters had put out a flat fire on the fifth floor of the building.
Station Manager Russ Freeman said: “Thank you to all the residents who followed the stay put policy within this building, this meant we could get crews inside the affected flat quickly and put the fire out as quickly as possible.
"Crews will be on scene for a little while longer working to make the scene and are checking in with residents."
He said his team will continue today to "carry out a fire investigation to determine the cause" of the fire.
It is thought no-one was injured during the incident.
