Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey hailed North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan as he made a visit to Oswestry - and insisted she will hold onto her seat at the next General Election.

Sir Ed was speaking on a visit to Treflach Farm, outside Oswestry, and was full of praise for the party’s first-ever MP in north Shropshire.

He said that her appetite for hard work and how ‘she stands up for people’ is why she will hold onto her seat against Simon Baynes in any upcoming General Election, believing she is the ‘hardest working MP’ the area has ever had.

He said: “I and the Liberal Democrats are very proud of Helen Morgan and from talking to people in North Shropshire, they are also very proud of her too.

“They’ve never had an MP who has stood up so strongly for the individual communities that make up North Shropshire whether it's Oswestry, Whitchurch or Wem.

“Every single village and town in this beautiful part of the world feels like they have an MP – they’ve not had that before – and she keeps on working.

“I think she is one of the most hardworking MPs in the House of Commons today and certainly the hardest-working MP North Shropshire has ever had.

“That’s why Helen will win because she works for those towns, she’s in those towns and is talking to the people.”

Sir Ed was shown around the farm by owner Ian Steele with Mrs Morgan, discussing his party’s ‘billion pound plan’ for farmers.

He said that the reason for Mrs Morgan’s success since she was elected in December 2021 – succeeding Owen Paterson, a former cabinet colleague of Davey's from the David Cameron-led coalition era – is because she has delivered results.

He added: “One of the big messages we got in the by-election and still getting everywhere we go is that the health service is the number one issue.

“People want to know if we will have enough GPs in their towns so they can get an appointment.

“She’s fighting on ambulance waiting times, on dentists, hospital and social care problems – who’s been championing it? Helen has.

“It’s not just the health service that people of seeing the benefits of having an MP who cares but it’s the military community too.

“She has really worked hard to represent Armed Forces families and drew a major concession from the Government with an amendment that says all military homes have to hit a decent home standard.

“The Conservatives didn’t want to do that but she found a way to get around it and it was a Liberal Democrat/Helen Morgan victory and that community has an MP who doesn’t just talk about it.”
