This has resulted in more than 8 miles of congestion backing up across the QE2 bridge into Thurrock, past junction 30.

Essex Travel shows traffic is slow moving between junction 29 (A127) and the crossing.

National Highways has units on the scene clearing the spill to prevent any damage to the carriageway.

It says there are severe delays of 90 minutes and 12 miles of congestion.

A spokesman for National Highways South-East said: "3 of 4 lanes remain closed on the M25 clockwise between J2 A2 Dartford and J3 M20 while we deal with a substantial spillage.

"There are severe delays of 90 minutes above usual journey times and 12 mile of congestion. Please consider alternative routes. Thank you."

Thurrock Council has warned drivers to plan their journey accordingly.

Update 4.42pm 22/06:

There are now severe delays back into Essex up to almost junction 27 (M11).

The lane closures will remain in place until this evening when emergency resurfacing works take place overnight.

There is also a lane closure at junction 1A (A206) with a broken down car.

The A13 Londonbound is facing long delays towards the M25 due to the lane closures.
