WITH so many historic buildings across the county it is no surprise there are so many ghost stories in Essex.

We’ve had a look through our archives and used Paul Lee’s ghost website to share some of the tales.

We also did the same last week in an article you can view here.

Here is a look at even more of the most haunted buildings in our area:

Harwich Redoubt Fort

A headless soldier haunts this fort; his neck apparently became trapped in a rope that was being used to hoist a gun.

The touch of invisible hands, hot and cold spots and footsteps have also been experienced.

The Red Lion, Manningtree

Thurrock Gazette:

The ghost of Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins is said to haunt this building.

The manager said: "I would say a few years back there was certain a few odd or unexplainable happenings.

"I don’t think I have experienced any recently, although, I’m not keen on being in the pub alone at night, I do feel that something is watching me sometimes."

The Greyhound, Wivenhoe

Keys disappearing have been blamed on a poltergeist, as have other strange phenomena, like beer taps being turned off and the smell of cheap perfume being detected.

Barrels have been heard moving in the cellar but nothing has been found amiss upon investigation.

Layer Marney Tower

Thurrock Gazette:

Henry, the first Lord Marney, who died before the building was completed, is said to have been seen here.

He is said to charge down the staircase on a horse wearing full armour (some versions of this tale say that he climbs the staircase of the tower).

The ghosts of servants and poltergeist activity have also been mentioned too. Activity includes the slamming of doors, the feeling of pressure on the chest as one sleeps, and bedclothes being pulled back.

Wedding co-ordinator at the Castle, Karen Brand, previously said: "There are various stories about paranormal activity but the current owners, have never experienced anything of note in 50+ years."

Cressing Temple Barns

Five spectres are said to "inhabit" these buildings, including a Roman centurion with a head wound who appears in the fields next to the site, a Cavalier in the farmhouse, a man in a floppy hat on the stairs and others too.

The Cage, St Osyth

Thurrock Gazette:

A sign on the wall here says "St Osyth Resident Ursula Kemp was imprisoned here before being hanged as a witch in 1582. It was last used in 1908."

It is now a private residence and has many paranormal claims attached to it. Black shapes have been seen in the room that was used as the holding cell while in other areas, blood stains were seen on the wooden floor.

"A woman in a bed was restrained by being kneeled upon; there are also stories of doors rattling and opening, cushions being thrown, the sound of people coming up the stairs, occupants being pushed and items moving and disappearing.

Great Chalvedon Hall, Basildon

A phantom schoolboy in a cap and clothing from the 1940s has been seen here, and there are stories of other children and poltergeist-like behaviour too.

A scullery maid who lived in the attic and wears a white cap and a dark long sleeved dress has been observed. In the past, a pet dog refused to go into the main living room.

The Point, Canvey Island

Thurrock Gazette:

A Viking has been seen here; according to legend, he was left behind by his fleet and waited for their return, only to be drowned

Oxford House, Earls Colne

Once a pub known as the Coachman's Arms, a smiling ghost wearing jeans and trainers has been seen, said to the son of a former landlord who was killed in an accident. He is said to appear in his old bedroom.

Hedingham Castle

Thurrock Gazette:

Strange shadows seen on the walls high inside the castle thought to be due to the spectre of Polly Miles, a beautiful witch from the late 18th century.

She disappeared one winter during a celebration in the castle grounds and her body was found floating face downwards in a river the following spring.

She is said to have been buried at a cross roads and every Halloween and Christmas Eve flowers appear at the supposed site of her burial.

In addition, Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General, is also said to appear in the castle grounds.
