INSPIRING youngsters have raised thousands of pounds to help beat cancer.

The children at Corringham Primary School have raised an incredible £7,000 for Cancer Research by taking on their own running challenges.

Hundreds of the children at the primary school came out in force to run the Race for Life event.

The youngsters, along with teaching and school staff, jogged, skipped and walked the 5km course.

Children and staff taking part also displayed cards in memory of loved ones who have survived, or sadly lost their lives to, cancer.

The pupils managed 14 laps of their huge school field.

Robert Wade, assistant headteacher, who is also the school’s PE leader, organised the fundraiser.

He said: “Given that cancer is something that will touch the vast majority of people in so many different ways, we felt at this time whilst coming out of a global pandemic, that the Race for Life event would bring the community together in a really positive way.

“We have been blown away by the enthusiasm of the children, their parents and the school’s staff in generating more than £7,000, which is over double our initial target, for this worthy cause.

“We now intend to repeat this event each year as we solidify our commitment to pledging a wider impact within the wider community.” All teaching and support staff took part in the event with the children in their year groups.

In total more than 390 youngsters took part across the day, within their year group bubbles.

All the parents said they were so proud of their children for their selfless efforts.

And it was the dedicated Learning Support Assistants who created the impressive balloon arch finishing line.

The annual Race for Life 5km is a series of events and routes around the country that give people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities the chance to come together and show cancer who’s boss.

Cancer Research UK has confirmed it is holding the running events from late summer into autumn.
