A PAEDOPHILE who had dozens of videos of child abuse stashed on his computer has been spared jail.

Mark Gerrard was found with abusive pictures of children, including 34 pictures and 66 videos of category A - the most serious kind.

Gerrard, 55, of Drake Road, Grays, also was found at his home address with 98 pictures in category C and 11 videos.

Basildon Crown Court heard that some of the images and videos contained children as young as three-years-old who were being abused.

Gerrard went on to admit three counts of making indecent images of children and was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court last week.

Mitigation for Gerrard said he “knows the harm he has caused” to himself and his family, but since the raid by police on his home, has taken courses to prevent future offending.

Recorder David Mayall told the court: “They are vile videos, including a three-year-old child who is in distress.

“You immediately admitted your guilt. You have taken steps to address your offending, and have no real interest in carrying out such activities.

“As you know, the sharing and viewing of images of abuse children make them abused again. You have previous good character and I accept that you show remorse.”

Gerrard was given an eight-month suspended sentence with 40 hours of rehabilitation along with 80 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £500 in costs.

Recorder Mayall added: “You do realise the sheer wickedness of your behaviour and you are determined to put a stop to it. You are extremely fortunate to have the support of your family during this period and you should consider yourself lucky.”
