New food hygiene ratings for cafes, restaurants and outlets across Basildon and Southend have been published by the Food Standards Agency.

Premises across the city are rated by the Food Standards Agency, based on the findings of local authority inspectors, who work all year round.

The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are then rated on a scale.

Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law.

Zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

Mental Health Unit Kitchen at Basildon Hospital has been rated four following the inspection on March 6.

Hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was found to be very good.

Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, (including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene was rated as good.

Essex Oyster Company Ltd, The Old Workshop, Unit 3 Clarence Road, Bowers Gifford has been given a rating of five. Inspectors found hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was very good. The business also had good systems and checks to ensure food sold or served is safe to eat, there was also good evidence staff knew about food safety, and the food safety officer had confidence that standards will be maintained in future. The firm was inspected on April 8.

Bosses at Winkles Seafood, Rectory Road, Pitsea are also celebrating a top hygiene rating after being told their business is very good. The Food Standards Agency rated the firm five. Inspectors found the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building to enable good food hygiene, hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage were all very good.

Southend Indian restaurant Ashiana is celebrating a top rating from the authority. Inspectors visited the business in Southchurch Road in March and rated it five. A number of aspects and parts of the business were noted as very good and good. These include hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage and cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.

Another Southend food outlet is also celebrating a top rating for hygiene and cleanliness. Bosses at Best Kebab, West Street, Southend were handed a rated of five by the Food Standards Agency, following an inspection on February 2021. Inspectors found that the hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was all very good at the firm.

A popular Thai restaurant is also amongst the businesses celebrating top hygiene ratings from the Food Standards Agency. Chiang Mai Restaurant, Southchurch Road in Southend was handed a rating of 5 from the authority. Various aspects and parts of the business were rated as good including hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage and cleanliness and condition of facilities and building.
