A HUGE £3.5billion theme park will cause chaos on roads and public transport, campaigners fear.

Transport for London, Thames Crossing Action Group and Highways England have raised serious concerns over the London Resort plans for Swanscombe in Kent.

If agreed the plans will see two theme parks built across 535 acres in north Kent.

The Thames Crossing Action Group fear the plan will create additional traffic on already congested roads including the Dartford Crossing.

Campaigners say it will add more traffic and fear the Lower Thames Crossing could compound issues further in south Essex.

The crossing will see a 14.3 miles tunnel connecting Tilbury over to Gravesend in Kent.

A spokesman said: “We are concerned the extra traffic the London Resort would generate on top of the existing issues that the Lower Thames Crossing would create, would see serious congestion, chaos, and pollution throughout the whole area.”

Highways England fear the M25 junction 2, M25 junction 30, the A13 and A1089 junction and the A2 and M2 east of the M25 could all be negatively impacted.

Bosses at Transport for London say an incident on roads or train lines could see major issues due to hundreds visiting the park.

The authority also says traffic from the park is likely to force traffic onto London’s road network in addition to traffic generated to and from the city itself, but hopes the Lower Thames Crossing will help the situation.

While backing the plans in principle Basildon Council raised concern about the need and demand for globally recognised theme parks in the UK.

If planning is approved work could start in 2022.

A spokesman for the park said: “The relevant representations have only just been published and we look forward to working our way through them with the organisations and the Planning Inspectorate.”
