A PEDESTRIAN died after she was hit by a lorry near to a busy port.

The woman was hit by the lorry at around 6.30am yesterday between the A1014 roundabout and the Ocean Boulevard roundabout, Corringham near to the DP World Port.

Police later confirmed the woman had passed away at the scene.

The road was closed between the roundabouts for hours while officers investigated the scene but it was re-opened in the late afternoon.

Community leaders and residents have sent their well wishes and kind words to the woman’s loved ones.

Aaron Watkins, Conservative councillor for Corringham and Fobbing said: “I am so sorry to hear this tragic news.

“We’ve got to wait and see what the police find from their investigations but once we know it may be that the council and DP World can try work together and ensure this doesn’t happen again.

“I want to send my thoughts, best wishes and preys to this woman’s family at this awful time.

“This is an even worse time to lose somebody close due to the Covid-19 social distancing.

“It’s especially difficult where we cannot see loves ones in the way we are accustomed to doing.”

Posting on Facebook residents also spoke of sadness.

One said: “So awful. Thinking of her and her poor family.”

Another added safety concerns and said: “I used to do daily speed checks on the port, I can’t say I am surprised to be honest. My heart goes out to the lady.”

A further resident said: “Oh god. That’s so sad. My thoughts are with the pedestrian’s family.”

Officers raised the alarm yesterday morning and warned drivers to avoid the area as it was due to be shut for some time.

Bosses at the force are also appealing for any witnesses to come forward with information.
